A Donn suspended ceiling grid consists of three component types: main tees, cross tees, and wall angles.
Together, these components build a structure to support ceiling tiles. Each component has a specific purpose, length, and function. Determining how many of each component is needed is key to correctly ordering a grid.
This guide shows the Donn components that RCT stocks and describes the function of each component and how the components assemble, to help you specify and order the correct components.
Donn 3600 Main Tee (white, 24mm)
The main tee is the primary load-bearing runner. Donn 3600 Main Tees measure 3000mm in length and 24mm in thickness with a white face. They are ceiling-mounted with hanger wires on the soffit. They take the load of the cross tees and tiles making them the structural backbone of the ceiling. They come in packs of 20. Main tees are placed parallel to the length of the room at the module spacing and can be joined end to end with integrated connectors for lengths greater than 3000mm.
Donn 1200mm Cross Tees (white, 24mm)
Cross tees connect to the main tees at right angles to create the grid modules. The1200mm cross tee slets the primary module dimension – spanning between the main tees to form the 1200mm side of a module. They have a 24mm white face like the main tees for a consistent look, and are provided 60 per carton. In a typical setup, the 1200mm cross tees create the 600 x 1200mm openings before subdivision.
Donn 600mm Cross Tees (white, 24mm)
The 600mm cross tee The grid is subdivided further by cutting at midpoints to divide a 600 x 1200mm opening into two 600 x 600mm modules, which is the standard opening for a 595mm tile. These also feature a 24mm white face and are packaged 60 per box. When used together, the 600mm and 1200mm cross tees enable the construction of the standard 600 x 600mm and 600 x 1200mm module configurations.
Donn 3000mm Wall Angle (white, 19mm x 27mm)
The wall angle is the perimeter trim An L-shaped section measuring 3000mm and with a profile of 19mm x 27mm will be fixed to the walls throughout the room. It will support the grid and perimeter tiles at the walls and provide a clean edge to the ceiling. They come 40 pieces to a box. The wall angle will be cut to length and mitred or overlapped at the corners.
How the components combine
The components remain consistent from one system to the next, but main tees run the length of the room and are held up by wires on the perimeter wall angles. The cross tees are spaced at 1200mm and are clipped to the main tees. The other cross tees at 600mm intervals divide the grid into 600x600mm modules which the tiles are dropped into. A uniform appearance is achieved as all components are white with a white matching face.
Getting quantities right
When ordering a grid, consider each component of your layout: each main tee runs, proper mix of 1200mm and 600mm cross tees for the module pattern, and the wall angle for the room perimeter (including some for cuts). In more complicated rooms, this can easily go wrong, so for any shape other than a simple rectangle, it’s best to have the RCT team check the take-off against your dimensions.
