The most frequent errors made when installing ceiling tiles include mismatches in size, edges, and grid widths. Handling errors also occur by fitting tiles into damp or corroded grids, dirty marks on tile faces, and by under-ordering. Almost all mistakes can be avoided with the right preparation. This guide covers the more common mistakes that lead to unsuccessful or unsatisfactory installations and how to avoid each one.
One of the biggest mistakes is ordering imperial tiles for a metric ceiling and the other way around. An example of this would be a metric 595mm tile, which sits loose in the frame of an imperial grid and can drop through, and an imperial 605mm tile will be too big for a frame in a metric grid. Avoid it By measuring a complete tile precisely to the millimetre before ordering, do not use the stated size of ‘600 x 600’ or ‘2ft’ and do not measure a cut perimeter tile that is currently in the grid.
A square edge tile will not sit flush in a microlook (15mm) grid, and thus will be positioned unevenly if it is standard tegular tile in that grid, and will appear proud and loose Avoid it By correctly identifying the grid type (lay-in, tegular, microlook or clip-in) and ensuring the tile edge matches to the grid. Before ordering, examine the existing tiles to see side-on and note the width of the grid.
Continuing to fit new tiles into an area with a leak, or into a grid that is rusting leads to staining and failure. A new tile under an open leak will be ruined and a corroding grid will stain the tile and may not support the tile. Avoid it by repairing the water source, drying out the void, and reviewing (and treating or replacing the grid if needed before installing) new tiles.
Soft fiber tiles break easily and can fall apart, while metal tiles can be ruined simply by bending them. Avoid it by breaking tiles at the edges, supporting them while they are lifted, and not pushing a tile into position— a push means there is a matching issue not a fitting issue, and yes. The tile and industrial work gloves will serve to protect the tile from hand glass.
Light colored tile surfaces are susceptible to fingerprints and dust, which is especially noticeable on a new white ceiling. Avoid it by working with clean hands or clean gloves, handling tiles by the edges, and keeping tiles clean during cutting and fitting. A perfectly fitted but finger-marked tile still looks poor.
If you run out of tiles mid-job you will have to wait for more tiles to finish the ceiling, and it will be worse if the new tiles are low stock. Avoid it by estimating quantity with 5-10% for waste due to perimeter cuts and breakages and ordering some for future maintenance. Before starting, confirm the stock for the full amount.
In the case of rough, oversized, or visible cut edges in the main field it will ruin an otherwise tidy ceiling. Avoid it by being careful with openings when cutting measuring first, cutting face up against a straight edge with a sharp blade, where under the opening, and keeping the edges cut within the perimeter, with factory edges visible in the field.
Almost all issues come down to two things — issues with the tile and issues with the grid and area prep. If the tile matches (size, edge, grid width, material), you dealt with the underlying issues, you handle cleanly, and you ordered enough (including spares), the installation will be straightforward. If you are uncertain about the match, verify it before you order instead of finding out when you’re on the ladder.

Why do my replacement tiles keep staining?
It is possible they were installed prior to a leak being fixed or into a grid that is corroding. Please repair the water source, dry the area, and inspect the grid prior to installing new tiles, or the staining will return.
