When selecting a replacement ceiling tile, you should consider five factors in relation to your existing ceiling: size, edge profile, material, performance (fire, acoustics, and light reflectance), and grid. If you match all five of these factors, the new tile will drop straight into your grid, match your existing tiles, and work the same as the original. However, if you get any one of these factors wrong, the tile will either not fit or will not match. Most purchases of ceiling tiles are replacements, not new installations. As a result, a ceiling which is already existing, instead of a blank specification, determines the parameters. Before selecting anything, you must determine the following aspects of the existing tile: size, edge detail, material, and position within the grid. UK ceiling tiles are predominantly two sizes: 595mm x 595mm and 1195mm x 595mm which lie within grids set out at 600mm and 1200mm centres (the tile is 5mm smaller than the module so it drops in). Older ceilings may utilize imperial dimensions — 605mm x 605mm or 1210mm x 605mm — which appear nearly the same but will not align properly with a metric grid, and the opposite is true as well. Measuring the tile, and not the grid, is the only way to differentiate metric from imperial reliably. The tile and grid are one system. The grid width (15mm or 24mm exposed face) must suit the tile edge, and the module Tiles should be fitted in either 600 x 600mm or 1200 x 600mm sizes. If installing new tiles into an existing grid, the tile must be the same size as the existing grid. For projects where the grid is also renewed, the tiles and grid must be specified together. The common issue for a tile not seating correctly is an incompatible tile/grid combination.
Brands will also rebrand and discontinue certain products (for example, Armstrong became Zentia, and individual tiles are re-named or retired over time). In instances where the exact tile originally specified is not available, search for a close equivalent in terms of size, edge profile, tile material, and specified performance criteria. If an exact match is deemed critical, tiles that have been custom manufactured are also available. The most important consideration is to match the measurable characteristics, not the product name.

How do I choose the right replacement ceiling tile?

Can I change tile material when replacing?

What if my exact tile is discontinued?

Why doesn’t my replacement tile fit the grid?
It’s usually due to edge profile, grid width or size mismatches: a tegular tile requires a tegular 24mm grid, a microlook tile requires a 15mm grid, and an imperial tile won’t sit correctly in a metric grid. Ensure the tile matches the grid.
